Rating for Austria

Austria is considered Germany’s little sister as their laws on company formation are quite similar. However, many German citizens cross the border in Austria because the country offers many interesting investment opportunities which have drawn the attention of credit rating agencies. Moody’s, Standard and Poor’s (S&P) and Fitch have issued similar ratings for Austria during the last few years.

Austria’s credit ratings from the largest agencies in the world

It is worth noting that between 2010 and 2015 Austria was rated AAA by all three agencies. The small country received the latest ratings from Moody’s, S&P and Fitch in 2016, when things have changed a little based on the economic uncertainty created by Brexit which has affected the whole EU. However, compared to powerful economies in Europe, Austria maintains a good rating and prospects for the following year. Austria’s latest ratings are as it follows:

  • –          Fitch last rated Austria AA+ at the beginning of August, 2016;
  • –          Moody’s rated Austria Aa1, at the end of June, 2016;
  • –          S&P last rated Austria AA+/ A-1+ at the end of March, 2015.

Rating agencies’ outlooks for Austria

Even if Moody’s downgraded Austria’s rating from AA+ to Aa1 at the beginning of the summer, it also changed its economic forecast from negative to stable. The change in the outlook is based on Austria’s strong economic growth, on the fact that the country has a diversified economy, and most of all because of its large pool of foreign investors and low interests on loans. The other two agencies, Fitch and S&P have maintained their stable outlook for Austria for the year to come. While S&P argued its rating based on the tax reforms to be implemented, Fitch announced a 1.6% average economic growth in 2017.
